Brighton Carnival History
"Brighton is the only place in England where a Carnival will ever become an annual institution."
1922: Brighton Carnival is born
The first Brighton Carnival was held in 1922. It's aims were similar to the 1923 Carnival, although as this was the first attempt it happened on a much smaller scale to the following year.
It was held from June 24th – July 1st. The following photograph shows staff members at Brighton Department Store Leeson & Voikins dressed up in fancy dress for the carnival.

"Bright Evening at Brighton"
You can see a video of the 1922 Carnival on the British Pathe website.
The film shows the seafront parade with carnival floats and the Carnival Queen in the procession. There was also a bathing dress parade on Brighton Pier which was a "great success!"
